What is a special education advocate?

 Special education advocates are people  with a true passion for the special needs population.  This may be  someone who has a child or other family member with special needs who  was successful in advocating for appropriate services for the child, or  it could be someone who has worked in a related field.  Advocates  provide support, direction, encouragement and comfort for families –  they work together with you and the school district to secure an  appropriate education for your child.  Special education advocates stay  informed about the most current state and federal legislation. 

In most cases, special education advocates are NOT licensed practicing attorneys, but are frequently utilized before taking the more expensive legal route.
